HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 cc547-8W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy, further to his reply to the hon. Member for Great Grimsby on 31 October that film and video tapes were handed to unarmed members of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority constabulary, if he will state whether armed members of that constabulary dealt with the party at any stage.

Mr. Goodlad

I am advised by British Nuclear Fuels plc that at no stage was the party dealt with by armed members of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority constabulary.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy, further to his reply to the hon. Member for Great Grimsby on 31 October about schoolchildren at Sella field, what instructions there are on visiting parties of children; and whether safety and reserve equipment is available to deal with children's sizes.

Mr. Goodlad

British Nuclear Fuels plc advises me that, in carrying out the duties laid on it by law to protect its workers and the public, all visitors to the Sellafield site arc accompanied by trained personnel, follow safe routes, and are given individual identifiable film badges to check against the remote possibility of radioactive contamination. Children under 12 have not been allowed on to the site. Respirators are available throughout the site in a variety of sizes, and there are stocks of protective clothing.
