HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 cc622-3W
Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many beds were available for geriatric care in the (a) public and (b) private sector in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985;

(2) how many geriatric patients were treated in (a) public and (b) private sector hospitals in each of the years 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Mrs. Currie

[pursuant to her reply, 23 October 1986, c. 984]: The available information is given in the table.

for hospital and community health services expenditure. Health authority income from sales of surplus land and property is now included in the definition of gross National Health Service expenditure. I have therefore provided figures on a comparable basis from 1978–79 onwards. Fully comparable figures from earlier years are not available.

These figures take no account of cash released through health authorities' cost improvement programmes which make a major contribution to increasing patient care.

NHS spending is planned to increase by 3–6 per cent, in real terms in 1986–87.
