HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 c542W
Dr. Godman

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has to improve the marketing and promotion of British fish products and British-caught fish.

Mr. Gummer

The Government are currently providing some £7.9 million towards a three-year seafish industry development programme for improving the marketing and consumption of fish. The possibility of further funding after 31 March 1987 is under active consideration.

Dr. Godman

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether any further arrangements have been made for the monitoring of radiation in fish and fish products; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gummer

This Department has regularly and extensively monitored radioactivity in the United Kingdom aquatic environment, including its fish, for nearly 20 years, and regularly published the results. The two most recent reports, of which one dealt specifically with the impact of the Chernobyl accident, were published on 8 October. Copies were placed in the Library of the House in the normal way. These reports confirm that the levels of radioactivity in fish and other materials taken from waters around and within the United Kingdom pose no threat to safety. This monitoring will be maintained at an appropriate level and the results will continue to be published.
