HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 cc576-7W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are the latest estimates for the total costs of the Falklands garrison, its supply and maintenance for the financial years (a) 1985–86, (b) 1986–87 and (c) 1987–88.

Mr. Stanley

It is estimated that the total defence costs of the Falklands in 1985–86 including the replacement of equipment lost during the campaign is £572 million of which £397 million is the additional cost of establishing and maintaining the garrison. For 1986–87 and 1987–88 the planned provision for the Falklands amounts to §435 million and £257 million respectively of which £234 million and £140 million relate to the garrison.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current strenght of the Falklands garrison in each category; what is the projected final complement; and what that is expected to be achieved.

Mr. Stanley

It would not be in the public interest to detail the make-up of the forces defending the islands. Force levels in the Falklands reflect the continuing need for a military presence sufficient to deter agression and to defend the islands against attack.
