Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were held in police cells on remand in England and Wales on 24 September and each succeeding day to the latest date available.

Mr. Mellor

On 31 October 1986 the total number of persons held in Prison Department custody in England and Wales was 47,414.

Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of persons held on remand in prison in the south-east region of the Prison Department for the most recent date available; and what was the comparable figure for each of the last five years.
