Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether approval has been given for the construction of underground nuclear weapons storage vaults at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, Royal Air Force Upper Heyford and Royal Air Force Bentwaters.

My Department is involved in continuing discussions with the US Government on possible storage facilities. No decisions have been taken.

Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list by variant the number of (a) short range nuclear weapons with a range of up to 200 km and (b) medium range nuclear missiles with a range of between 200 km and 1000 km that have been removed from Europe as a result of the 27 October 1983 Montebello decision of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nuclear planning group.

[pursuant to his reply, 30 October 1986, c. 262.]: The withdrawals of the following categories of NATO nuclear weapons in Europe since the Montebello decision have been announced to date:

  1. a. In the range up to 200 km, Atomic Demolition Munitions and Honest John missiles have been withdrawn entirely.
  2. b. In the range between 200 km and 1000 km Pershing I missiles have been withdrawn partially.
