HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 cc312-3W
Mr. Amess

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many people are presently employed in the nuclear power industry; how much is invested in the industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Goodlad

As I said in my reply to the hon. Member for Walthamstow (Mr. Deakins) on 13 June 1986 at column.343, about 44,000 are employed directly by BNFL, UKAEA, NNC and in the nuclear-specific work of the generating boards. Well over 100,000 jobs depend directly or indirectly on the industry. During the financial year 1985–86 about £1.100 million was invested in our commercial nuclear installations, most of which was spent with United Kingdom industry. In terms of current orders, BNFL alone has overseas contracts worth in excess of £2.5 billion.
