HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 c312W
Mr. Amess

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will give the statistics for the number of deaths that have occurred each year for the preceding five years in coal mining and oil drilling operations in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

Figures for fatalities in the coal industry are contained in the National Coal Board's report and accounts 1985–86, and for oil drilling operations in the "Brown Book" (Development of the oil and gas resources of the United Kingdom 1986), copies of both of which have been placed in the Library of the House. Since those documents were published, there have been a further three fatalities in the oil industry and eight in the coal industry.
