HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 c301W
Mr. Holt

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many universities or polytechnics offer degrees in French; and if any steps are being taken to reduce this number.

Mr. Walden

Information from the educational counselling and credit transfer information service showed that in 1986–87 37 universities in Great Britain and six polytechnics in England offered degrees in French and French studies. My right hon. Friend is not aware of any steps to reduce this number.

Mr. Holt

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students, of British birth, graduated from a British university with a degree showing fluency in (a) Chinese, (b) Japanese and (c) Arabic in the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. Walden

In 1985, there were 48 and 93 students with United Kingdom domicile, who obtained a first degree from universities in Great Britain in Chinese languages and studies and in Oriental, Asian and African languages and/or studies, respectively. Separate information for Japanese and Arabic are not available.
