HC Deb 03 November 1986 vol 103 cc364-5W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has concerning the average percentage of the workload of gynaecological departments which is spent in National Health Service hospitals upon non-emergency gynaecological out-patient attendances for (a) the performing of abortions and (b) the performing of sterilisations; and what percentage of such non-emergency gynaecological out-patient work is spent dealing with the sequelae of such procedures.

Mrs. Currie

I shall let my hon. Friend have a reply as soon as possible.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has concerning the total amount spent each year by the National Health Service upon the performing of abortions and sterilisations; and what element of this figure is made up of any special fees paid to doctors for such operations.

Mrs. Currie

The accounts submitted by the health authorities to the Department do not show separately the amounts spent on abortions and sterilisations and I regret therefore that we are unable to provide the information requested.
