HL Deb 22 May 1986 vol 475 c536WA
Lord Mottistone

asked Her Majesty's Government:

If they will make a statement on the future of HMS "Victory".

Lord Trefgarne

The Admiralty Board have agreed that the Portsmouth Naval Heritage Trust should be allowed to include HMS "Victory" as part of a prestigious and unique tourist attraction to join the "Mary Rose", HMS "Warrior" 1860, and the Royal Naval Museum, within the historic area of the Portsmouth Naval Base no longer required for defence purposes. As a result, a charge will be made by the trust for entry to HMS "Victory" from the beginning of June, part of which will make a small contribution to the maintenance costs and part be used to build up what I believe will be a unique tourist attraction, based on Britain's naval traditions. HMS "Victory" will, however, remain an HM ship in commission and serve as the flagship of Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command.
