HC Deb 09 May 1986 vol 97 c277W
Mr. Roger King

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when he now expects that the mandatory fitting of coach speed governors will come into force; if their use will be extended to heavy goods vehicles; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Discussions with vehicle and equipment manufacturers and vehicle user groups are underway at the British Standards Institution. I expect a British Standard to be agreed by the end of the year. I will be consulting the coach industry on a timetable to phase in the fitting of the equipment as rapidly as possible and I expect the first vehicles to be fitted during 1987.

Some heavy goods vehicles are voluntarily fitted with speed limiters. We have no plans at present to introduce any legal requirements.
