HC Deb 26 March 1986 vol 94 cc522-3W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the recent discussions between Her Majesty's Government and the Government of the People's Republic of China about progress on matters relating to Hong Kong.

Mr. Renton

The third meeting of the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group took place in Hong Kong from 11 to 14 March. It was a successful meeting. I have arranged for copies of the communiqué to be placed in the Libraries of both Houses.

Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had recently with the Government of the People's Republic of China about the granting of Chinese citizenship to non-ethnic Chinese citizens of Hong Kong after 1997; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Renton

This is a matter which has been discussed with the Chinese Government in the Joint Liasion Group. They confirmed that non-Chinese who meet the legal requirements under Chinese nationality law may apply for Chinese nationality, and that such cases would be dealt with by the appropriate authorities.
