HC Deb 26 March 1986 vol 94 c508W
42. Sir Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many representations he has had in support of the Government's proposals to make changes in the system of agricultural research and development in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

Our strategy for agricultural research and development was set out in a paper issued in December 1985, following consideration of a consultative document issued in May 1985. Comments on the paper were not specifically invited, although most of the reaction reported to officials of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland has been favourable. Only the proposals related to the new Macaulay institute have proved contentious, and most of the comments made on that have been concerned with the proposed location rather than the remit, which has been widely welcomed.
