asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the average hours worked per week by junior doctors in the National Health Service for the years 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1985.

The following table shows the average hours of duty of junior doctors. Information is not routinely collected on the number of hours actually worked, but an independent survey commissioned by the Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration indicated a weekly average, in 1981, of 55.3. A further survey has been commissioned, but the results are not yet available.
