Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many personnel have been released on redundancy terms from the Port of London Authority since 1 October 1983 up to the present date; and what is the total money paid by Her Majesty's Government towards the cost of those redundancies.

Mr. Ridley

The number of registered dock workers and others employed by the Port of London Authority who have taken voluntary severance since 1 October 1983 is 1,398; the Government have contributed £26.5 million towards the cost of those severances.

The number of registered dock workers and others employed by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company who have taken voluntary severance since 1 October 1983 is 724; the Government has contributed £18.3 million towards the cost of those severances.
