Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what arrangements have been made for the provision of war emergency headquarters in Northern Ireland by local authorities.

Mr. Scott

With the assistance of the district councils, the Government plan to create 26 district civil defence centres by designating existing buildings and adapting them where necessary.

civil services in war emergencies using selected existing buildings. The Government have announced that the effectiveness of these arrangements will be enhanced by the construction of three purpose-built protected centres in the region. This is scheduled to begin in 1987 and to be completed during 1989.
