asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether there has been any reduction in the figures for road deaths for the first three quarters of 1985, compared with the equivalent periods for previous years; and if he will make a statement.

Road deaths for January-September 1985 were respectively 11 per cent. and 9 per cent. fewer than in the corresponding periods of 1984 and 1983. 1983 was the lowest year for road deaths since 1956.
