Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what allocations have been made through the joint funding scheme for 1985 and 1986; which voluntary organisations have been given grants; and for what purposes.

Mr. Raison

A total of £4.8 million was allocated to the joint funding scheme for the financial year 1985–86. Grants have been made to the following agencies:

  • Christian Aid
  • Commonwealth Society for the Deaf

  • Feed the Minds
  • Friends of Jairos Jiri
  • Help the Aged
  • Interlink
  • International Voluntary Service
  • Leonard Cheshire Foundation
  • Leprosy Mission
  • National Childrens Homes
  • Ockenden Venture
  • OXFAM
  • Population Concern
  • Population Services
  • Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind
  • Salvation Army
  • Save the Children Fund
  • Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund
  • SOS Children's Villages
  • SOS Sahel
  • Tear Fund
  • Water Aid
  • World University Service

  • World Vision of Britain
  • Young Mens Christian Association
  • Zimbabwe Trust

These grants have been provided to support over 700 long-term development projects in a large number of developing countries. The projects encompass a wide range of activities including the application of appropriate technology, improving local water supplies, developing more effective production and marketing techniques, improving farming methods, non-formal education, primary health care and family planning.
