HC Deb 17 March 1986 vol 94 cc24-5W
45. Mr. Brandon-Bravo

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what action he is taking on the level of the heavy goods vehicle driver test fee.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Department has just reviewed the heavy goods vehicle and public service vehicle driver tests and fees. We shall be consulting on proposed changes shortly.

The changes we propose will alter the length of the tests and, in the interests of road safety all the exercises in the PSV test will be conducted off the road. The HGV driver test will be no less rigorous but shorter.

We propose to reduce the HGV fee from £65 to £40 and to increase the PSV fee, which has not changed since 1982, from £36 to £40. This should provide a net saving of some £1 million to candidates.
