Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were refused leave to enter the United Kingdom during 1985; and how many of those people originated from the New Commonwealth and Pakistan.

Mr. Waddington

The available information relates to those removed from the United Kingdom after being refused entry, who numbered 18,505 in 1985; of these, 10,334 were nationals of countries of the New Commonwealth or of Pakistan.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Islington, North of 16 January, Official Report, columns 623–5 concerning arrivals from Bangladesh, how many of those refused entry were (a) subsequently given temporary admission, (b) returned to Bangladesh and (c) returned to a third country;

(2) pursuant to his reply of 16 January, Official Report, columns 623–4, concerning persons denied entry, how many of those refused entry were (a) subsequently given temporary admission, (b) returned to their country of origin and (c) returned to a third country.
