HC Deb 04 March 1986 vol 93 c94W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the latest number of people who are paying income tax at the top rate of 60 per cent. on earned income; and what are the total tax receipts obtained from these persons paying at the rate of 60 per cent.

Mr. Moore

About 90,000 married couples and single people will pay income tax for 1985–86 at the rate of 60 per cent. The total tax liability on that part of their income subject to the 60 per cent. rate is about £1.4 billion. If investment income is disregarded, the number liable to tax at 60 per cent. on part of their earned income is about 50,000, with a corresponding tax liability on that income of about £0.8 billion.
