HC Deb 04 March 1986 vol 93 cc117-8W
99. Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of the relevant age groups are in some form of pre-compulsory schooling; and what was the comparable figure for 1979.

Mr. Dunn

In 1985 43 per cent. of 3 and 4-year olds (excluding rising fives) attended maintained nursery schools, nursery classes or infant classes in primary schools. Both the percentage rate of participation and the actual numbers were the highest ever. The comparable percentage for 1979 was 37 per cent.
