Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Paymaster General (1) if he will list the number of persons made redundant who were included in the unemployment count for each of the years 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985 and at the latest available date for which figures are available; and if he will show this figure as a percentage of the total unemployed for each year;

(2) if he will list the numbers of disabled included in the unemployment count for each of the years 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985; and if he will show this as a percentage of total unemployment in each year.

Mr. Wainwright

asked the Paymaster General how many people aged (a) under 19 years and (b) under 24 years are currently registered as unemployed in (i) England, (ii) Yorkshire and Humberside, (iii) West Yorkshire and (iv) the Kirklees area; and in each case, what proportion of them have been unemployed for a period of 52 weeks or more.

The following information is available in the Library. The figures relate to unemployed claimants on 9 January 1986, the latest date for which an analysis of unemployment by age and duration is available.

The table shows the numbers of unemployed claimants aged under 19 years and under 25 years (not available under 24 years) in the regions specified.
