Mr. Dickens

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has about the cost to the EEC of the research project undertaken by Reading university and the university of Bologna, Italy, over three years involving visits to European centres in order to establish a league table of the prosperity and attractiveness to travellers of those centres.

In 1983 Reading university was asked by the Commission to undertake a study into urban decline in the European Community. Bologna university was not involved. The study has not yet been published. I will write to my hon. Friend when I have further details of the study and its costs.
