HL Deb 12 June 1986 vol 476 cc500-1WA
Lord Chelwood

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the replies they received to their letters, to the trade association and others concerned, encourage them to believe that compliance with the voluntary code of practice for sale of still table wines by the glass will now be sufficiently widespread to make legislation unnecessary.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Lucas of Chilworth)

Representatives of the trade sponsors of the voluntary code of practice have recently been invited to make positive suggestions for improvements to the code in order to make its acceptance more widespread. These discussions are still in progress. Until the potential for a voluntary solution has been exhausted it would be premature to consider introducing legislation.
