asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the progress of the coastal protection work at Hengistbury head.

The scheme at Hengistbury head is very complex and has been divided into a number of distinct, phases. Construction work has begun on phase one, comprising two timber groynes on Solent beach and protection to the cliff at Double dykes. This phase also includes a mathematical and physical model study which is still in progress. Phase one-A, comprising emergency construction of 120 m of the eastern causeway, has also begun.
