Mr. Fallon

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much has been spent in regional aid in the northern region since 1983; and how many jobs are estimated to have been (a) created or (b) preserved.

Mr. Peter Morrison

[pursuant to this reply, 3 June 1986, c. 406]: Between April 1983 and March 1986, £303.9 million in regional aid—regional selective assistance and old-and new-style regional development grants — was paid to companies in the northern region. An estimated 28,100 jobs were expected to be created and 10,300 jobs preserved as a result of payments of new-style RDGs and offers of RSA made in this period. Since old-style RDGs are not linked to the creation or preservation of jobs no estimate is available of the effect on employment of payments under that scheme.
