Mr. Freeson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what regulations govern EEC nationals who wish to apply for postgraduate studentships in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Walden

Postgraduate awards made by my Department or by the British Academy are governed by the State Award Regulations 1978 (as amended). Awards made by the five research councils or by local education authorities are governed by the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations 1983 (as amended).

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what difference there is between the treatment of EEC nationals living in the United Kingdom and British subjects so far as the award of postgraduate studentships is concerned.
