Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many young people are presently engaged in YTS courses in Wales; and if he will estimate the total for each year group in the two-year course beginning in 1986–87.

There were 16,395 YTS trainees in Wales at 31 March 1986. It is estimated that 18,407 16-year-olds will enter YTS2 in 1986–87; it is also estimated that 7,857 17-year-olds who complete 1 year YTS places during 1986–87 will take up continuation places. In addition there are 2,952 17-year-old entrants who will be eligible for one year's training.

This information is not available. The question of student status primarily relates to the form of off-the-job training provided by managing agents on which information is not held centrally.
