HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 cc541-2W
Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received regarding the ineligibility for child benefit of parents with children aged over 16 years being educated at home; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

Twelve letters have been received from hon. Members and 15 from the general public. A Government amendment has been made to the Social Security Bill to provide for child benefit to be paid for children who continue to be educated at home after reaching the age of 16 years, having been educated at home before reaching that age. Under the Child Benefit Act, at present, benefit is not paid in these circumstances.
