Mr. Needham

The information is as follows:

1981 43
1982 48

Number
1983 39
1984 30
1985 27

Mr. Hume

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many cases where cervical cancer was diagnosed in each of the past five years were, or are being, successfully treated.

Mr. Needham

The number of new cases of cervical cancer (malignant neoplasm and carcinoma in situ of the cervix uteri) registered with the Northern Ireland cancer registration scheme for each of the years from 1980 to 1984 is given in table A.

It is not possible to provide information concerning the number of those who were or are being successfully treated for this disease. The number of deaths registered with the general register office in these years, where cervical cancer was the principal cause of death, and the rate per 100,000 of the female population aged 15 and over are given in table B.

The two sets of statistics should not be directly associated for any one year in view of the known deficiencies in the data from the Northern Ireland cancer registration scheme and the variation in time between a case being registered and a death occurring.

Table A
New cases of malignant neoplasm and carcinoma in situ of the cervix uteri registered 1980–84
New cases
1980 136 (63)
1981 137 (48)
1982 152 (69)
1983 217 (121)
1984 189 (113)

Note: Figures in brackets relate to cases of carcinoma in situ included in total.

Table B
Deaths registered from cervical cancer and rate per 100,000 female population aged 15+
Registered deaths Rate per 100,000 female population aged 15+
1980 34 5.83
1981 43 7.21
1982 48 7.99
1983 39 6.44
1984 30 4.91

Note: All deaths shown in above table relate to deaths from malignant neoplasm of cervix uteri.
