HC Deb 03 June 1986 vol 98 c450W
Mr. Eastham

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give details of the value and percentage of total British Rail Engineering Ltd. orders which have been placed abroad in each of the last three years, giving a breakdown between the countries involved.

Mr. David Mitchell

British Rail's policy is to buy British whenever the product and price are right. In the years 1983 to 1985 British Rail Engineering Ltd. placed about 95 per cent. by value of its orders with British suppliers — and most of the remainder via United Kingdom-based companies. Details of individual orders are a management matter for BREL, and I understand that a breakdown by country could not be provided except at disproportionate cost.
