HL Deb 31 July 1986 vol 479 c1090WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will take steps to bring the activities of the secret services under parliamentary control; and

Whether they will take steps to subject the activities of the secret service to public scrutiny.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Glenarthur)

My right honourable friends the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary are accountable to Parliament for their responsibility for satisfying themselves that the security service operates entirely within the letter and spirit of its directive. The Government have no plans for closer public scrutiny.
