HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 cc606-7W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will publish the full details of (a) plutonium produced, (b) plutonium in spent fuel dispatched and (c) plutonium reprocessed for each week since 1 June and 1 December, at each of the civil magnox reactors operated by the Central Electricity Generating Board.

Mr. Goodlad

No.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether all official statements made by board members of the Central Electricity Generating Board on the production and use of plutonium created in Central Electricity Generating Board reactors have to be approved by his Department in advance.

Mr. Goodlad

No.

Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he will state the total weight of plutonium exported for civil use since May 1979, and give the amount, by weight, exported to each country involved.

Mr. Goodlad

[pursuant to the reply, 24 June 1986, c. 93]: In the period May 1979 to March 1986 a total of 2,115 kg of plutonium — in both separated form, and when present in irradiated fuel—has been exported for civil purposes. The countries to which plutonium has been exported in consignments larger than gram quantities are as follows:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • 607
  • France
  • Federal Republic of Germany
  • Japan
  • Netherlands
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • USA

Each country listed has a safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Information relating to individual country figures is commercially sensitive. I regret that Austria, Netherlands and Sweden were omitted in error from the list in my answer of 5 July 1985 at column 308. Total exports to these countries represented significantly less than 1 per cent. of the total.
