HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 c509W
Mr. Frank Cook

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) whether he is satisfied that irradiated fresh fruit and vegetables are not being imported from other European countries and sold through normal retail outlets, contrary to the United Kingdom Food (Control of Irradiation) Regulations; and if he will make it his policy to enforce the present ban on such imports until such time as the regulations are appropriately amended;

(2) how many samples of food have been tested to detect any irradiation treatment at ports of entry into the United Kingdom since 1 January 1985; and what proportion of samples were found to have been irradiated;

(3) how many prosecutions for the importation of irradiated food contrary to the United Kingdom Food (Control of Irradiation) Regulations have been initiated since 1 January 1985; how many have resulted in successful prosecutions; and what information he has as to how many allegations of such breaches of the regulations have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for consideration.

Mr. Whitney

I have been asked to reply.

I shall write to the hon. Member.
