§ Mr. Lathamasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will make a statement on the measures which he is taking to resolve the problems relating to the designation of research councils under section 2(3) of the British Nationality Act 1981, and Statutory Instrument 1766 of 1984; and whether he will ensure that these difficulties receive early discussion through the departmental Whitley machinery.
§ Mr. WaddingtonHome Office officials are in close touch with officials in the Department of Education and Science, which is responsible for the research councils which have been designated under section 2(3) of the British Nationality Act 1981, to identify the detailed terms under which persons may be in service under these councils. We shall then consider whether any change should be made to the designation order. I understand discussions will continue between the research councils and the relevant staff associations. I hope this matter can be resolved as soon as possible.
