Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Deartment what is the current possition with regard to the reclassification of prisons in the Yorkshire and Humberside area.

Mr. Mellor

On 24 February 1986 Hull, previously a training prison, became a local prison and Thorp Arch, previously a remand centre, became a training prison.

Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what effect the reclassification of prisons in the Yorkshire and Humberside area has had on the population of Leeds prison; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

The average population of Leeds prison between January 1985 and February 1986 was nearly 1,300. Between March 1986 and May 1986 (the latest date for which figures are available) the average population was 1,175.
