HC Deb 24 July 1986 vol 102 cc363-4W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the annual cost of, and how many people are involved in, the United Kingdom's cultural representation in the United States of America.

Mr. Eggar

The British Council's country programme costs for the United States in 1986–87 are estimated to be £613,000. It employs one and a half United Kingdom based staff and two local staff, who work from her Majesty's embassy in Washington. In addition, four locally engaged staff paid for by the FCO work full time in the cultural section of the embassy, at an estimated cost of £48,000.

A large number of private organisations are involved in British cultural activities in the USA but their cost is not quantifiable.
