HC Deb 24 July 1986 vol 102 c399W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the general categories of crimes that make individuals unsuitable to work with children; and how many entries there are in the criminal names index of the police national computer that fall within those categories.

Mr. Giles Shaw

It is for the employing authority to make a judgment as to the suitability of the applicant taking into account only those offences which may be relevant to the particular job or situation in question. In deciding the relevance of convictions a number of points will be considered, including the nature of the appointment and the nature, time and frequency of the offence. With reference to the number of entries in the criminal names index of the police national computer, I refer the hon. Member for the reply given to his question on 9 July 1986, at column 182, as subsequently corrected.
