asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many children in Wales are currently in receipt of free school meals.

The latest available information, which relates to September 1985, indicates that 90,700 pupils at all maintained schools were then in receipt of free mid-day meals.

An estimated 30,000, but most of these will be among the estimated 36,000 children who are expected to benefit from the cash compensation for school meals within the proposed family credit.
