HC Deb 21 July 1986 vol 102 c37W

Mr. Hill

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of the 15 wards in Southampton are covered by neighbourhood watch schemes; and what information he has as to the number of uniformed police involved, and as to the number of citizens on the organising committees.

Mr. Giles Shaw

I understand from the chief constable of Hampshire that there is one neighbourhood watch scheme in Southampton, which operates within the Bassett ward. The scheme was initiated by the current coordinator, a member of the public, who is assisted by other residents. Two uniformed beat officers also assist, in consultation with the local crime prevention officer and superintendent. The police have also received 16 inquiries about establishing neighbourhood watch schemes covering six wards from members of the public in Southampton and are to meet those interested.
