Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the numbers of voluntary homes and hostels in England for people with mental handicaps in each year from 1970 to the most recent year for which data are available, giving the total numbers of places and the numbers of persons aged under 65 years and aged 65 years and over accommodated in each year.

Mr. Whitney

The numbers requested for the years 1975 to 1985 are given in the table. Prior to 1975, figures are only available centrally for the mentally handicapped and the mentally ill combined.
