§ Mr. Evennettasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied with the application and interpretation of the primary purpose rule by the immigration service.
§ Mr. WaddingtonThis rule and the other requirements for people seeking entry on the basis of marriage are necessary safeguards against the use of marriage to secure admission or settlement by those who would not otherwise qualify. Immigration staff apply the immigration rules approved by Parliament in the light of the decisions of the courts and the immigration appellate authorities.
§ Mr. Soleyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were detained under Immigration Act powers for a period of more than two months on completion of a custodial sentence during 1985.
