HC Deb 21 July 1986 vol 102 c66W
Mr. Alan Howarth

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the functions of the financial management unit; and what work is being carried out on policy evaluation within the Civil Service.

Mr. Brooke

The financial management unit completed its work at the end of 1984. However, the joint management unit was established in early 1985 to assist the top management of the Treasury and Cabinet Office to provide effective leadership in carrying through the programme of management reform in the Civil Service designed to secure better value for money, seeOfficial Report, 12 December 1984, column 493.

Policy evaluation is the responsibility of Departments concerned with individual policies. In addition, as was announced when the final reports of the financial management unit were made publicly available, the Government share the approach described in the report on policy work and the financial management initiative, and the joint management unit is working with Department on a programme of improvements, see Official Report, 10 June 1985, column 298.
