Mr. Stuart Holland

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what were the assets net of short-term liabilities and long-term borrowing for self-administered pension funds in the United Kingdom in (a) 1984 and (b) 1985; and what were the absolute and percentage shares of their source of funds divided between (i) private sector funds, (ii) local authority funds and (iii) other public sector funds.

The latest information relating to the net assets of pension funds is for 1984 and is published in table 11 of Business Monitor MQ5, second quarter 1985. The latest information on the income and expenditure of pension funds is for 1983 and is published in table 8 of Business Monitor MQ5 third quarter 1984. Information relating to the net assets for 1985 and income and expenditure for 1984 and 1985 will be published later this year. Copies of Busines Monitor MQ5 are in the Library.

The available information relates to 1984. It is estimated that the top 10 pension funds accounted for about one-quarter of total net assets at the end of December 1984.
