HC Deb 04 July 1986 vol 100 c656W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the discussion by the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference of the treatment of the Irish language in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Tom King

The Irish Government put forward proposals concerning the position of the Irish language in Northern Ireland at the conference on 10 January. At its meeting on 17 June the United Kingdom Government described current administrative practice, and indicated as areas for possible future development the provision of dual language street names where the local community so desires; ascertaining more precisely the number of Irish speakers in Northern Ireland; and financial support for Irish language-related cultural activities.
