HC Deb 04 July 1986 vol 100 c656W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the discussion of flags and emblems by the Anglo-Irish Intergovernmental Conference.

Mr. Tom King

The Irish Government put forward proposals relating to flags and emblems at the conference on 10 January. At its meeting on 11 March the United Kingdom Government described the public order legislation for Great Britain before Parliament; explained the desirability of bringing Northern Ireland public order legislation so far as possible into line with that for Great Britain; and indicated that the question of flags and emblems would be considered in the context of the extension, as appropriate, by Order in Council, of this legislation to Northern Ireland. That remains the position.
