HC Deb 04 July 1986 vol 100 cc682-3W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what are the present European Community quotas for each type of fish imposed on the sea-fishing industries of each of the member states; and which of the quotas have been exceeded to date.

Mr. Gummer

[pursuant to his reply, 3 July 1986]: The information regarding quotas is set out in the annexes to the following Council regulations:

(a) Community Waters

  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 3721/85 dated 20 December 1985
  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 3777/85 dated 31 December 1985

(b) External Waters

  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 3551/85 dated 12 December 1985
  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 3725/85 dated 20 December 1985
  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 3730/85 dated 20 December 1985
  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 3732/85 dated 20 December 1985
  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 3783/85 dated 31 December 1985
  • Council Regulation (EEC) No. 114/86 dated 20 January 1986 extended the validity of Regulations (EEC) Nos. 3721/85, 3730/85, 3734/85 and 3777/85 until 31 December 1986.

The regulations were published in the Official Journals of the European Communities, Nos. L 339 of 18 December 1985, L 361 and L 363 of 31 December 1985 and L 17 of 23 January 1986, copies of which are available in the Library.

Official catch returns by member states are made available by the Commission of the European Communities on a monthly basis. The most recent figures, covering the period January to April 1986, indicate that the following quotas have been exceeded:

  1. (a) Netherlands: Cod in I.C.E.S. Areas VII (excluding Vita) and VIII (EC zone)
  2. (b) Netherlands: Whiting in I.C.E.S. Area VII (excluding VIIa)
  3. (c) Germany: Saithe in I.C.E.S. Areas Vb(EC zone) and VI.

Further fishing by vessels of these two countries for the stocks concerned have been prohibited by Commission regulation.

United Kingdom catch returns are available for the period January to May 1986 and they show that no quotas have been exceeded.
