HC Deb 30 January 1986 vol 90 cc581-2W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis and the chief constable of the West Midlands constabulary as to the number of cases of rape which have been reported to their officers during the last six years; and how many of these did not result in criminal proceedings being instituted against the accused.

Mr. Mellor

The information requested on allegations of rape reported, but not recorded as offences, is not available. The numbers of offences of rape recorded by the Metropolitan police and the West Midlands police force are published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables" (table S3.1 of the issue for 1984). Information on the proportion of recorded rapes cleared up in each police force area was given in reply to a Question from the hon. Member for Knowsley North (Mr. Kilroy-Silk) on 23 January 1986 at columns261–2.
